Relationship Status:
Married
Tri Experience:
Age grouper
My key race for 2008:
Ironman China / Ironman Switzerland / Kona
My key race for 2009:
will be decided on the beach the day after Laguna Phuket Triathlon!
Tri Interest:
Training Groups, Friends
I'd most like to meet people from (separate multiple locations with commas):
Switzerland, Asia
My Tri Story:
After some years as a competitive Mountain Biker and Road cyclist I decided, in 2000, to do an Olympic Triathlon just for fun. And here we are! Still struggeling with the swim, but overall having good fun on Ironman distances.
10 IM finishes (6x Switzerland, 1x China, 3x Kona) no DNF's no penalty!
The conditions for the swim leg of the Singapore 70.3 are pretty ordinary I have to say, especially with the wave starts and the 2 laps. There's usually 200 - 300 people in each wave start, and from memory it was something like:
Mens and Women pro + disabled
All women
men under 24 + men over 60
men 25-29 & men 30-34
men 35-39
men 40-44
men 45 +
Teams go last
The ride is not really a problem; the first and last 1 km or so is on a service road but then you're on freeway the rest of each 30 km lap. It's actually a bit tougher than you expect as there are a couple of hills and the freeway is elevated so there was a headwind all the way out to the turn-around point.
The run is a 7 km loop, which you do 3 of, and it is flat as a pancake and a bit protected from the sun.
Overall I would say that it is a good event and very well organised. The humidity is a bit of a killer and you should expect to do a little slower than normal. As a guide I completed Busselton in 5:08, and Singapore in 5:39 and I thought I was fitter before Singapore.
Hi Ian
Have a look at this 2 suggestions. Both are at Naithon Beach, a quiet, nice place close to the airport.

To be somewhat mobile on the Island I'm suggesting to rent a motorbike. It's very cheap and you get them at any corner without to much formality.
If you are travelling alone you can also choose not to make any advance booking and choose one of the many B&F's or small Thai Hotels which can not be found on Internet.
I just found out that 70.3 Singapore will be held on March 22nd, 2009. Maybe that's something you wanna do!
Hope this helps.

Hi Sandro,
Following on from your advice I have done a lot of research regarding training in Phuket. I am not sure if this is right but the accomodation in the north of the island seems to be limited and expensive.
How far south can I afford to be and still be able to access good rides and be not too far from the pool ie what areas should I look for.
I am going to be there for 16 days and was hoping that I wouldn't have to pay anymore than $50US a day at the very most.
Hope you can help
Ian
PS Tried to contact Shaun at triballsitic but have had no reply
Hi Esther, I have not yet decided on my 2009 races. However, it's unlikely that I will do IM China again. It was an unbelivable experience but the race is to early in the season. The only advice I can give you, be ready for very hot temperatures and do not go just for the race. Have a look around the Island and get intouch with the locals.
Hi Sandro,
I am going to be in Asia in early Jan 2009 waiting for my little girl to arrive back to Singapore. I wanted to do a block of training somewhere in Asia for three weeks. I was thinkingof somewhere in Thailand and after reading what you said about Phuket thought that you might be able to offer me some advice.
Is there a pool there? Are there palces to ride (safely)? What is the situation variety wise for running?
Hope you can help
Ciao Sandro.
Hi Sandro. Wow 5 LPT! Impressive. I just started training 4 months ago. I train with Shaun for swimming only. I did my first Olympic Tri in Bali and loved it! Totally hooked! Am doing Singapore 70.3 next week and have already signed up for my first Ironman in April. Will do LPT as well... Unfortunately I am not a natural runner so my triathlons are quite slow at the end...but I do love the swim and bike. See you at the next LPT!
About wasting time: Who is putting tons of pictures and songs on his blog? And who is chatting with other crazy triathletes all over the world? And by the way: I just got back from my bike ride and will leave soon for a run!
