Profile Information

About Me:
Keen bean enthusiastic cheerleader for and participant in all things sport.
I just love to know the gossip from Asia's sporting events and delight in passing it on to the masses. In 2007 I founded Asia Runner - Asia's magazine for running and multi-sports.
Tri Experience:
Spectator, In training, It's my livelihood
My key race for 2008:
Ironman China, Laguna Phuket Triathlon, Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore (media partner for all)
My key race for 2009:
oooh. I dunno. The world's my oyster.
Tri Interest:
Training Groups, Event Meet-ups, Business Relationships, Friends
I'd most like to meet people from (separate multiple locations with commas):
All over the place
My Tri Story:
Once upon a time I went to a triathlon. To watch. Then I went to some more. I'm still watching and mingling. Building up to it. Am I a faker then to be on iamtri.com? Nah. I do RUN, BIKE, SWIM in any combo at adventure races. Done some marathons.

Here's the deal.

Bike? ok, though am far better off road mountain biking at the moment.
Run? love it. see blog for info.
And then there's the weakest link... Ta DAH. The swim.

My two inhibiting factors:
1. Everyone swims freestyle. Well, aside from the one guy I saw who did a one armed backstroke, and
2. The swim is in open water without a life jacket (I am a closet adventure racer).

Progress to date:
1. Can now, for the first time in my life, swim something vaguely like freestyle for over an hour. Not a current threat to any world record holders, but I can pick coins off the bottom of the pool a treat. Fight underwater, and do 3 (good form) underwater somersaults without getting dizzy.
2. to be continued... (ok, lost the life jacket and helmet, but can I still wear shoes?!)

a hive of activity at the national stadium

I don't know what happens in the real world but I'm sure there must be some kind of arrangement for different groups to use the track at different times? Today on my trip to the national stadium here in Lao PDR, in downtown Vientiane, it was an absolute bun fight for space. What a fantastic state of affairs when there are so many people in this impoverished nation keen to get active. There was a national football game on the grass, complete with spectators with their plastic chairs on the track… Continue

Another foot off the bench. That makes 2! :-)

This is absolutely TOP secret as if the physio finds out he'll kill me... but I have to offload somewhere. For the first time in bloody MONTHS I have managed something akin to a shuffle round the track. A long long way to go, but this is the first break into jog/run since I tore my calf muscle in July. And that was after a duff hamstring/piriformis which benched me end of April. Steady away. I can't even tell you my pace, as it's absolutely shocking. Minutes per km slower than normal. But what… Continue

How being benched is improving my swim

Totally stoked that I went to the pool 3 times today as I still can't run or bike. And am not even allowed to do the big 20 mins 'interval' walk today as the physio nearly fried my leg with the ultrasound yesterday. So dragged my sorry ass to the pool at 6am this morning for a Lao2km. I call it the Lao2km because the actual length of the pool is a mystery. It's certainly not 25m, possibly 20m on a good day. Still, it's the best I've got available so I'll just get on with it... A good session.… Continue

Tell Alison not to worry...we'll look after her when she gets here. I am not sure if I will do the Triathlon...I am still recovering from Singapore 70.3 and want to be super fresh for Laguna...so will at least do a the swim in the relay if not just the sprint (my trainer suggested both...as a joke!!)

Hi Steph....lol...can you believe I actually heard you yell 'go phuket'!! You were near the finish line...and i was running very slow - more like a painful shuffle than a run. Actually loved every aweful step and brutal paddle and painful push! Can't wait to do IM Oz in April...oh lord i am going to die!

Hey Steph, great to be in contact with you.
No I will not do 70.3 Singapore as I'm racing 70.3 Monaco on the same weekend.
I'm planning to spend 2 months, end of March to end of May 2009, in Asia. The stage should be a combination of business travelling around Asia (PRC, HKG, Singapore) but also some extensive training. I have not yet decided on the location. Phuket is a favorite as they have a small Tri community and travelling is easy with daily flights to Hong Kong, Singapore and some PRC City's. However, I have some concerns on the wheater conditions, as this will be in the middle of the rainy season.
Do you have any recommendation?
Cheers.
