Food & Drink for a marathon?
Well usually I take 6 SIS 'Go' gels, one every 30 - 40 mins and I carry a 750ml bottle with 'Nuun' electrolyte solution.
I carry spare Nuun tablets so I can refill on route. I also use the feed stations to get some 'extra' calories. Usually they have bananas, biscuits, jelly babies etc....
However, I prefer to be self sufficient. That way I know I am in control.
Hope that helps. Ian
Hey Martin,
Dory for the confusion, there is only one in Wexford around Gory and courtown. I would imagine a beach start in Courtown and then inland witht eh bike and run around mount lenister for a bit of elevation. Ouch!!
If it is the same as the one you mentioned in Conemarra there is mention of it on the folowing site. http://www.irishtriathlon.com/irishtriathlon/index1.html
I'M Connemara is the name listed here. I think I would like to go with an Mdot though first in case it is also my last!!!.
I heard yesterday that there may be an ironman distance race (again not m-dot) around Gory and Courtown in Wexford around August. Not sure how much there is to it and can't find anything on Web.

Martin, that's great. Small world eh !!! You must have met up with so many people I know at the race.... in particular dave Granger. Not sure but I think he was part of the relay team that won either the whole race or at least the relay section. Conal is a great guy. Really friendly. I may very well try and get over myself next year if it fits in with Barcelona ;-)
Remember, the greatest journey between any two points is the one between your ears, so, focus on your target and you will achieve it!!! The glory is crossing the line, not the time.

Martin, thanks for the comments. Did you do the Eireman or Ireman?? Can't remember what they called it....... if it was 'that' race, it was organized by a friend of mine; Conal. Do you know him?
How did the race go, be great to hear. All the best, Ian
Hey Martin - you should defo consider IM Switzerland next year. Lived there for a while and it gets great support...however its surprising it doesnt sell out that quickly...although I suspect it might go quick as the other european IM events have become so so popular.Other options would be IM France or IM UK or the Challenge events which still have slots..Think Ian is getting a group to go to Challenge Spain next Oct 2009..Could be a great option........Wasnt aware of the Iron distance races in Ireland next year..Hope they fill up well...My own training has been fairly inconsistent this year, so goal again is to finish with smile and avoid medical tent..get over the line and celebrate and then plan next years event....
By the way - I bet your boxing background will give you a great advantage in any of the Ironman open water swims....
Martin, consistency is key over a progressive plan. Too much or too fast too soon = injury.
New trainers every 400-500 miles and ideally alternate your shoes to allow them to re-expand.
In my build up for the '8'. I ran 8 days consecutively and then rested for 1/2 days. I increased mileage gradually. In the end I was running 100-140 miles a week. In my final prep phase I ran a marathon every 'other' day for 18 days with an 8 mile run on the days in-between.
My advice is to allow yourself a good period of time to 'build' and get used to time on your feet.
Many coaches say it's not a good idea to run over 2.5 hrs in training; I don't agree....
A good session for me and I have found also to be good for my clients, is to split your day; for example, 16 miles in the morning, 10 miles in the evening. Obviously you don't rush into a session like that but I found towards the end of my '8' prep I could do that day after day.... it's all about conditioning and mental strength.
