Today, after my morning flail in the pool, I was able to sneak down to
the Derby City Cup cyclo-cross race in town this weekend. The course has
been set up in Eva Bandman Park just east of downtown Louisville, which
will apparently be the site for the 2013 World Cup of Cyclocross.
Whooot! Usually, Louisville is kind of a crappy town for fun events like
this. Yes, we have Ironman, but you have to swim in the nasty Ohio
river. Local races, except for the Derby Marathon, tend to the plebeian
in terms of organization and course selection. So, it's great when
something like this comes to town.
The course itself looked pretty challenging to a neophyte spectator like
myself. Saw a couple of noteworthy spills, and took loads of pictures.
Looks like people were having a great time chasing each other round the
course. Spectator attendance seemed low to me, and I might have been one
of the few people down there watching not related to one of the racers
or trying to move merchandise. That's a shame, because it's a really
spectator friendly sport and venue. Lots of great areas to watch the
race from and lots of good racing going on.Really made me want to hop on
a bike and join the fun. I'll be posting some pics soon.
