Rick and Dick Hoyt are my favorite people. Their story continues to inspire me.

Ironmanlife: Vote for the Hoyts
Kevin Mackinnon reports on Rick and Dick Hoyt

You want tough? Try pulling your son on a raft for 2.4 miles. Then pushing him on a bike for 112-miles in the hot sun. OK, hot sun doesn't begin to cover it - blazing hot sun? - and winds that would stop most mortal beings in their tracks. How about finishing the day with a marathon, once again pushing your son every step of the way.
That’s tough. That’s caring beyond the caring requirement us dad’s are supposed to provide. That’s Dick Hoyt. How many times have we all cried watching that dramatic coverage of Dick pushing his son Ricky through the Ironman.
As much as we in the triathlon world revere the Hoyts, for some reason the folks voting in this year’s Versus “CamPain,” which is looking to decide who is the world’s toughest athlete, have so far placed the Hoyts in third. They've made it to the next-to-last round of voting, making it further than legends like Lance Armstrong and Terry Fox. Now they need our help to make it to the final.
Third place is amazing, but ... Are you kidding me? So what if some guy named Lance Mackey has won the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest (-100 degree temperatures, frostbitten feet, throat cancer and all) in the same month two years in a row. So what if some dude named Urijah Faber is the WEC Featherweight Champion and took on 12 assailants in a Bali barroom brawl in 2005. Sure, those guys would beat me up with both hands and feet tied behind their backs, but please, we’re talking about the Hoyts here.
It’s hard enough getting through an Ironman. Try getting through an Ironman in Kona, high winds, scorching temperatures and all, while pulling and pushing your son. How many people do you know who have a rough time doing an Ironman … and they’re just trying to get their own bodies through the event?
A few years ago I did a competition on the website, asking for nominations for the most amazing Ironman dad. Mark Oleksyn won hands down – all he did was send in the picture he took of the Hoyts on the podium in Kona the year before.
So, if you have a minute, please head over to the Versus website and vote for the Hoyts. I did, and hope that you’ll pitch in so that the rest of the world will learn what we already know. They’re the real deal. End of story.
