Stop Blaming The Cyclist

As our training volumes increase I provide a few thoughts about cyclist-motorist interactions and attitudes that exist in our auto-dominated society.  We have had several accidents in our community over that last several years.  Cyclists can be the best advocates or worst enemies when it comes to changing attitudes.  Read on...

Ironman Texas - Race Recap

The following is a recap of Ironman Texas, for the benefit of those ever wanting to complete this race, and for those who believe that anything is possible in life.  Overall, this was an awesome race, including the course, the support, volunteers, the venue and organization. Anyone who says otherwise, has probably done a dozen IM's and is therefore nit-picking.  As a first timer, I enjoyed almost everything about the…

Let it Snow, but Don't hit me when I run!

They say the older you get the wiser you get, then why do the same things still cut us to the core or make us feel so good? Well I had one of those yesterday and it wasn't the good kind, but as every door closes a window opens. I refuse to share the gory details, but lets just say after yesterday I am better today (you know who you are!).

So this morning I was told it was snowing (as I lay in bed at 9) and a friend was going to the gym. I blew it off and went back to sleep for a bit,…

How much should I weigh?

Skimming through his book Racing Weight by Matt Fitzgerald prompted me to write this blog post. Do you ever find yourself swimming, running or cycling to lose weight? Or does weight loss come as a bonus to exercise? The question I get asked a lot is…

Introducing Myself

Hey all,

I've been blogging almost daily about my Ironman training for nearly 1.5 years.  Today is my first day at iamtri.

It feels like one of those "group support meetings" where I say, "Hi, I'm Ryan.  I, too, am addicted to triathlon."

Only I don't know who's going to say "Hi, Ryan" back.  Hopefully someone out there!

Here's the link to my blog, in case you want to check it…

Winter Cycling

I live in New England and snow has finally settled around where I live. My question is what to expect in winter cycling, as this is my first time. My biggest concern is that the salt will ruin my bike. Will it? Also, is there anything else that I should know about cycling in the winter months.

1/15 first outdoor ride of year

it warmed up to 45 today so i drug the bike out of the shed and brought to work for a lunchtime ride w/ my pal Brian. it was a very humble start to the year. Brian (who is a frigging stud) dropped me within 2miles of the start before coming back to drag my far arse around the loop and back home. Not sure which is worse my legs or lungs. the really funny part is how great shape I THOUGHT Iwas in before this. Nothing like a big old dose of reality to set you straight.

Recovery Week and BRUTAL Training Weekend

After my swim camp I was pretty fried so this last week was an unscheduled recovery week. Good thing too because this weekend was a brutal one. I had a long, hard run on Saturday followed by an epic brick workout on Sunday.

Check out the video HERE for all the gory details.

Recap of First week of Build Phase and Preview of Swim Camp

I have a video blog that tracks my triathlon training. Check it out if you'd like.

This past week has been rough. I’ve transitioned from my last Base Phase into my first Build Phase. Essentially, I have taken my base distances and added speed and hills to the equation. My body is DEFINITELY feeling it.

Despite being tired and feeling beat up I’m loving it. Had some great workouts this past week including a tough run on Saturday and a fun (interesting) ride on… Continue
