A friend, Jeff, believes that every important race should have it's own appropriate training beer. Or maybe, beer of training. A beer that get's you through the long days, gives you something to look forward to, whispers in your ear, "You can do it man!" As one who might be deemed a disciple of this philosophy, and one who loves to hear beer whisper. I can only add..."Hell to the yes!"
One might think that the philisophical conversion is the hard part, but I can tell you it is not. The

I am having a hard time remaining positive right now. It is ten days from the Harvest Moon Duathlon. It will be my first time ever to run a 5K, bike 56 miles, and run 13.1 miles for a total of 72.2 miles in a single day. I'm guessing that it take me between 7 and 8 hours (30 minutes for the 5K, 4 hours for the 56 mile bike, and 2 1/2 hours for the half marathon) to complete Harvest Moon. That's being conservative, and yet that is a huge amount of time on the course. I'm ready to be on the course…

I'm so done with a training plan. sick of figuring what I should be doing and how hard. today I had it and just ran at lunch again. no heart rate monitor or plan just me, my feet and the heat. pushed it when I wanted to took a detour up a tough hill just because. I felt a like a dog let off it's chain.
But me being a triathlete I can't let a workout go without crunchign some numbers 3.95 miles in 35:30. ahhh all is in balance now.

The day before -
Eh, Saturday morning I woke up feeling like I got rocked by a hurricane. I am not good on a little sleep depravation, 4-5hrs is just not enough. A little dose of HTFU and I got my tail down to the lake side for a wake/sober the hell up open water swim. Equipped with my trusty Helix I attacked the water. Ahahahahaha! That was an…

We headed up to Canada on Wed night-I wanted to not be rushed and have a couple of days to get ready for the race. We were sharing a house with 6 others—most were racing as well. It was a great house and great roommates.

After the swim and after grabbing my transition bag I went into the changing tent. This time I had decided to wear a ful-body tri suit - despite of the disadvantages it might have at potty breaks. Yet, full coverage means also no sun burn between tri top and tights because that spot regularly gets forgotten. So I only had to change into my shoes and helmet, put on the sunglasses and race belt. A friendly lady volunteer helped me sort through the stuff in my bag and re-packed it. I was wondering…

It's "Birthday Week" and reaching a "special milestone" this year. Although aging has its downside, I've come to realize that it's a privilege that is not granted to everyone- and not all that many who reach my age can still do what I do! To commemorate the privilege that I've been blessed with I'm riding 60 miles each day this week (and of course we have to be in the middle of the 6th heat wave of the season). I'm also doing a fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society- asking everyone I…

4am. Again, I did not sleep too well, but better than the other two
nights. but 4am and the alarm went off and then backup alarm went off,
so we both showered, I filled my bike bottles with ice and water, made
some pb sandwich, and another one for the course, also some tea. The
kids were allowed to stay in bed until Martin would pick them up from
the hotel a bit later for their volunteer job. The advantage of having
a hotel 10min (walking distance) from the race start. The hotel people
had said…

I have written endlessly, it seems, about my heroes. It is kind of a pastime of mine. Eric Moussambani is one of them. If that name does not sound familiar just do what I do when my daughter poses a question that threatens to expose me as Clark Kent and not the Superman she knows:”Google it honey, Daddy has to finish his oatmeal”.
Eric the Eel, as he is affectionately known, was that swimmer from Equatorial New Guinea in the Sydney Olympics that did a front crawl

Those who read my blogs know there are too many experiences in such a race to squeeze all into one blog post. So, here comes part one - before the race. Our family owns one van and no other car - also the kids already have returned to school. That's why we dug out the concept we already used for IM WI two years ago and I rented a one-way and drove to Louisville on Thursday and the family was to get there on Saturday. In this way the kids only missed one school day. Well, I got my car, packed eve…

My favorite race, The Presque Isle Tri, was held yesterday and I was about 4 minutes faster than last year. It would be great if they'd expand it to an Olympic distance race. I'm still trying to get 9 races in by the end of September...up next is Ford City (sprint), I just don't want the TRI season to end! That does it, as soon as I become independently wealthy, I'm going to start my own Triathlon Circuit, travel around the world and compete in races (and fight crime/solve mysteries).

Only one more week until the race! I'm feeling pretty good about this race, and all I'm hoping to accomplish is to set a new PR for the half marathon, which would be finishing under 1:53:17. I've been training to run at a 7:50/mile pace, but that goal race was to be in late October. I'm pretty much assuming I won't be able to hold that tempo, since I will only be 11 weeks into an 18 week program, but hopefully I'll have at least put in enough time to set a new PR. So here is last weeks workout,…

Officially started training for Ironman Florida 2011 2 weeks ago. I decided to volunteer for the race this year to insure me getting in for next years race. I have complted the IM Florida race twice(2004, and 2006) also IM Louisville in 2008.
A liitle bit about me. I am not your normal looking Ironman. I am 6'2 and race weight has been 225lbs. I did race in Arizona at 214 but was my only DNF. Due to dehydration on the course. I did learn more by not finishing than anything I di

Today, I was scheduled 2 hour bike ride consisting of a 30 minute warm-up, 5 X (12 minute surges in Zone 3 and three minute recoveries) and an 18 recovery ride back to home and a 30 minute run in my heart rate zone 3. The bike was pretty good. I exited out the door right before sun rise, which made the bike ride nice and cool. Cherry Creek State Park, where I did my out and back turn around, was busy with high school cross country runners. I managed to see my daughter's XC team, and I cheered th…

So I am trying to figure out what my key race will be for 2011, and I have been thinking and I really want to do a big race(more competitors/ triathletes). The only thing that frightens me is the swim start. I have only done a couple triathlons, but what I have found is that my training swim time is always better than my race swim time, and the time difference is by minutes. yikes! I get trapped, or really nervous and my breathing gets all messed up. Is there any way to improve for race day??

It is almost two weeks until Harvest Moon Duathlon, and I'm already freaking out. This is not good! What did I get myself into? It is pretty much a half ironman distance race with the swim. I have a 5K run then a 56 mile bike followed by a half marathon. Of course, I am preaching to the choir, and I know everyone knows the distance. However, I'm just trying to calm my psyche. I've done shorter duathlons, and I know how my legs feel on the run after the bike leg. It hasn't been a good feeling so…
