Hey there! School is starting tomorrow and I'm soooo not ready yet. I've had one of the most relaxing breaks in the 7 years I've been teaching. Ugh! I even looked at the forecast just to see if snow was in the forecast and nope...not even a drop of rain. So the alarm clock must go off at 4:30 a.m.
How many tri's did you do this last year? I've only done the sprint so this whole idea of doing the HIM is crazy but I'm going to do it (no choice...already paid for it). Are you hoping to do a HIM this year? That's a great swim time for 1/4 mile. I can only dream of being that quick. We'll see in June when I do my first Olympic...that will give me a good idea of how I'll do for the HIM. The biking and running are my favorites. I did my first marathon this past year as well and ended up liking it so much that I did another one 4 months later. I live two miles from the start of the HIM so I'm going to focus on training right on the course. In February I will be joining up with a group of people to train with. The bummer thing is I don't have any girlfriends who do this and so my husband sometimes isn't too hot on the idea of me spending tons of time with a group of guys but he's slowly starting to understand. I'm not out for a Sunday bike ride...I've done a couple with girlfriends and we go about 14 mph...UGH! I can mantain about 19 mph but at least I got some "girltime". LOL Anyways, right now there's four of us at my gym working out together who enjoy endurance stuff (2 HIM'ers and 1 marathoner). We're going to move it outside when the weather gets better and the sun starts to shine for longer. :)
Well, I'm off to grade some papers. Have a kick butt week!!!
Hey there! Before I did my sprint tri I only swam in open water 4 times (total of 1 hour). I swam the 1/4 mile in 8 minutes and that's with me freakin' out. I look back and laugh at myself now but dude! I hate it! At that time I really didn't know too many people doing triathlons and now I've met more and we plan to do some training together beginning in February. Right now I have a friend that we meet together twice a week to workout together and the rest of my workouts are on my own. In my area there aren't too many women training for HIM's...they stick with sprint tri's or the aerobic classes (blah blah blah). This spring and summer will be my first Olympic and I'm going all the way in August and competing in the Lake Stevens 70.3Addicting for sure. What about you...buddies training with you? What made you decide to start doing tri's? Our HIM's are right around the same time....YEAH AUGUST!!!! Are you going to take swim lessons?
BTW...I give you all props doing a tri and not knowing how to swim. I know how to swim and still HATE the lake swim. I'm such a wimp in cold water that has funky stuff in it (seen and unseen stuff). Way to go dude!
hi jay, sounds like you've got an issue on your hands. most back spasms are caused by chronic overuse without adequate recovery. i would be careful though, as you can actually damage ligaments, muscles and even cause inflammation of your vertebrae. i'm sure you already know all this... but i'd make it priority to rest as much as you can, esp. if you're one of those big tough construction guys ;) but the most important thing is that you completed the race. that would be an A+ time for me! so yeah, race one this weekend. not prepared at all, had an accident last week so lost a whole week of training. we'll see though - can't win everything!
surprisingly, i never have even been in a wetsuit. i hear it does provide a lot of buoyancy - but you can't miss what you don't know right? i'm lucky enough to have a background in swimming, competed for awhile, but i've lost alot of my base. i didn't start tri very long ago... have been running for a couple of years and swimming i already explained. i'm still learning the bike but loving it. i can pull a comfortable 25 miles right now.
did a little research into walden pond. you might find this useful: http://www.breakwatersportstraining.com/images/WaldenYardsAndRoutes.pdf
oh come on!! you're not old. you're 28! maybe sometime you can get signed out of your nursing home and we can meet up to train. i need some tri-friends. don't forget your cane though, g-pops.
ok - i'm going to have to say that i hate you for going to hootie and that i cant believe that you actually do like hootie... no one ever does. i've been begging someone to go with me forever to see him, esp when hes at the cape. i have tickets to saturday - yay me :)
anyways - back to tri. i've heard that walden pond is pretty good. no one bothers you about the swimming? the lifeguards at hopkinton were bratty because i wasn't swimming in their roped off area, which was maybe 40 feet. do you have the address to where you get in at walden? parking area or something? i'm not swimming with wetsuit in sept for the swim or the tri. i can only imagine its going to be colder... oh well. it'll be a defrost bike ride :)
hi jason! i'm excited for the swim. haven't swam there yet - i hope to get down there before the race and take a dip. i've been looking for places around the area to o.w. swimactually... seeing that i got booted from hopkinton state park (the lifeguards informed me that it was against the law to swim outside the ropes, the cops said it was perfectly fine...) but i have a race there actually by max performance coming up. i've heard that they put on a pretty good race? where do you swim around here?
ps. darius fan huh? hootie's the all time original although i do have to admit i like his movement into the country genre :)
