Profile Information

Relationship Status:
It's Complicated
About Me:
Keen bean enthusiastic cheerleader for and participant in all things sport.
I just love to know the gossip from Asia's sporting events and delight in passing it on to the masses. In 2007 I founded Asia Runner - Asia's magazine for running and multi-sports.
My Tri Story:
Once upon a time I went to a triathlon. To watch. Then I started working at them. I'm still watching, mingling and cheerleading. I do RUN, BIKE, SWIM in any combo at adventure races but the idea of formula racing (as i call triathlon) is just not me. Eggs, basket, tears, bedtime etc. Especially given the last year of injury. I may consider triathlon when i am recovered if it was an ultra distance (multiple days) and things like tying my shoes and drying the cracks in between my toes were not going to take up valuable life and death time.
Tri Experience:
Spectator, In training, It's my livelihood
Tri Interest:
Training Groups, Event Meet-ups, Business Relationships, Friends
My key race for 2010:
oooh. I dunno. The world's my oyster.

conspiracy theory - my right leg

One day I shall make a tremendous re-entry onto the multi-sport scene, the actual sporting bit rather than the mingling sidelines. It will not be in the next few months.

12 months of right leg niggles are truly taking the piss now with this mangled knee business. On once more, the right leg. What to do? Absolutely nothing but suck it up and see what happens. Injury is one of things that come along and smack us in the chops when we least want it, but let's face it there would never be a good tim… Continue

London
watch out for: pavements (am still tripping over the kerb)
risk: being shot (park where i run is culling deer 8pm-7am at present)
clothing: have to wear lots of clothes, hat and gloves
phsyical: dehydration because i never want to drink cold water when runnin… Continue

a hive of activity at the national stadium

I don't know what happens in the real world but I'm sure there must be some kind of arrangement for different groups to use the track at different times? Today on my trip to the national stadium here in Lao PDR, in downtown Vientiane, it was an absolute bun fight for space. What a fantastic state of affairs when there are so many people in this impoverished nation keen to get active.

There was a national football game on the grass, complete with spectators with their plastic chairs on the track… Continue

Another foot off the bench. That makes 2! :-)

This is absolutely TOP secret as if the physio finds out he'll kill me... but I have to offload somewhere. For the first time in bloody MONTHS I have managed something akin to a shuffle round the track. A long long way to go, but this is the first break into jog/run since I tore my calf muscle in July. And that was after a duff hamstring/piriformis which benched me end of April.

Steady away. I can't even tell you my pace, as it's absolutely shocking. Minutes per km slower than normal. But what… Continue

How being benched is improving my swim

Totally stoked that I went to the pool 3 times today as I still can't run or bike. And am not even allowed to do the big 20 mins 'interval' walk today as the physio nearly fried my leg with the ultrasound yesterday.

So dragged my sorry ass to the pool at 6am this morning for a Lao2km. I call it the Lao2km because the actual length of the pool is a mystery. It's certainly not 25m, possibly 20m on a good day. Still, it's the best I've got available so I'll just get on with it...

A good session.… Continue

by the way, look at my Singapore swim time to get an idea of just how slow i am . .. Looking at your progress you would be one uber-confident racer by this upcoming Singapore 70.3 in March!! Adventure races are a whole bunch harder!! (and no; burbly is not a word)

Hi Steph, you do not know me but I ran with one of your iAmtri friends this morning here in Shanghai. Just writing to encourage you to swim! One year ago this week I could not even swim 25meters freestyle. I am now up to a wee bit more than 3000m freestyle without stopping. You are a keen bean cheerleader! Just cheer yourself while blowing those blurbly bubbles as you give it a go. We mountain bikers are smart/dumb enough to do anything!
Give it a go!!Hope to see you cheering me on in my first or second IM in Langkawi or Hainan. Or maybe you will come race Huangshan Mountain Bike Race here in the Mainland in May?? Give it a go!!
