Is Beaver Dam Lake the place you swim? Is motor boat traffic prohibited on that lake? I live in Central New York state, but I am moving to Reston in July. I was seriously disappointed with the lack of places to open water swim in No. VA.

Profile Information

Relationship Status:
Married
About Me:
"Dust. Wind. Dude."
My favorite movie quote. It's from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Not necessarily my favorite movie. I like to think I have a little more depth than that, but I always liked the song Dust in the Wind by Kansas, and Bill and Ted's irreverent rendering of it made it even more poignant for me. We are dust in the wind, but we need to enjoy the journey and laugh at ourselves along the way, dude!
My Tri Story:
No big story, just love to swim, bike, and run. Love the physical challenges of training for and racing longer distances. Was in the Army Special Forces and triathlon fills the void of the physical aspects as well as some of the camaraderie. I also enjoy running competitively and have seen more PRs since I started a triathlon training regimen.

I am in full training mode for my first Ironman this spring in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. I am also running the Boston Marathon this year. (I qualified in the fall and was so excited I didn't think it through before registering. My coach is not real happy with me doing the marathon 2 months before Ironman, but I'm committed now.)

I did 2 70.3 races last season. 5:07 @ Tupper Lake, and 4:57 @ JerseyMan. I also PRed both my half marathon (1:27) and full marathon (3:15) last year. I am 43 years old and in the best shape of my life. I've got momentum, so I'm riding the wave!

I love to meet new people and swap stories, so feel free to ping me any time.
Tri Experience:
Age grouper
Tri Distance:
2x Olympic (or approx 70.3 mi/113.1km), Long course (or approx 140.6 mi/225.3km)
Tri Interest:
Training Partners, Training Groups, Event Meet-ups, Friends
My key race for 2010:
Ironman CDA, Boston Marathon

DeRuyterMan 2009

I did a 70.3 on Monday, May 11th. Alone and unsupported. It was a blast!

I actually PRed with a 4:52:53. Not too shabby when you consider my transitions included things you don't normally deal with like locking my bike to my jeep.

I parked on the dam at DeRuyter Reservoir, near the spillway (west side of dam).

The day before I went out and measured .3 miles from the spillway along the dam. I was going to drop a buoy, but it turned out that there is a dock on the east end of the dam with a buoy that was right at .3 miles.

So my swim went from the spillway out around the boat buoy and back twice.

I climbed out of the water at 30:50.

My T1 time was 3:30.

The bike route was also a double loop. I rode up to DeRuyter Road (.1 mile) took a right and headed straight for rte. 92 (across rte. 80, down the big hill near the golf course, Oran Delphi Road through Delphi Falls, and across rte. 20)

Took a right on rte. 92 and rode to Pompey Hollow Rd. Then out Pompey Hollow, back across rte. 20 and on up to Dephi Falls Road. Took a left on Delphi Falls Rd., then an immediate right on Cardner and up that winding little road to rte. 80.

Then a left on rte. 80 and up what I like to call "reality check hill." Took the next right on Reservoir rd. and cruised past Dam rd. and along the east side of the lake.

Took a right on South Lake Rd. and then a right back onto DeRuyter Rd. and along the west side of the lake. Took a right back down that .1 mile on Dam Rd. to my jeep, swapped water bottles and headed back out for a second loop.

My bike computer says it was 56.5 miles total, with a time of 2:45:13 (20.5 mph average). There were headwinds all the way down Oran Delphi Rd. and that stretch where I can usually cruise at 28-30 mph I was pushing hard just to get 23-24!

T2 time was 3:07 because I had to lock up my bike and take a quick "pit stop."

I ran from my jeep up the .1 mile of Dam Rd., then took a left and went out to South Lake Road. Another left on Reservoir Rd. to mailbox #127 which I measured at 3.28 miles from my jeep. Turned around, headed back the same way to my jeep and repeated that loop twice.

I was amazed at how strong I was feeling on the run. The 6 and 7 mile points from Tromptown Half Marathon are along DeRuyter Rd, so I clocked my mile pace accurately 4 times during the run. On the uphills I did 6:50s and on the downhills I did 6:30s!

Didn't keep those up for the whole run, but still had a great run.

Run time was 1:30:13.

So there you have it, the DeRuyterMan 70.3

Any local triathletes who want to do the DeRuyterMan now have the map of the course and the time to beat. :)

Drop me a line if you want to do it but the directions don't seem clear to you. I would love to hear if anyone else does it, and I might even be induced to do it again with you if it fits into my training schedule.

Looks like lots of ex-SF guys doing tri's, will get onto that group! The guys are either in Iraq (DOD contractors) or doing triathlons!!!!

South Africa isn't what it was back in the 80's, but glad you enjoyed your time that side. i lived all over the country (thanks to the army) and loved Phalaborwa (in the north east) and Langebaan (on the west coast) the most. We are headed back next week for a holiday and will hit the training hard for IMWA when I return.

Let us know how the racing goes, as your tri season is kicking off soon.

I'm definately with you as far as Triathlon filling that specwar void. I spent my last16 years as a Recon Marine. After I retired I needed something to keep the fire burning and keep me in shape. I had some great times with the guys from ODA 725 down in Panama. Man that was a long time ago but still brings a smile to my face. Good luck with your training this year

Hi Scott,
I was also in the military, SF unit in South Africa. I to have seen that triathlon fills that gap that is opened when you leave a prof. unit of guys behind.

Good luck with the IM race, with those 70.3 times you should come in under 11 hours, all ending well.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the add. Always happy to add a fellow triathlete from my favorite state and former stomping ground... Especially one who is cool enough to rock to The Killers. I have some really great music to add to my page. Just need time... Anyway good luck on your training. Sounds like you're off to a great start and are in good form. I hope to be on that very same path soon. Working on recovering from Spinal stenosis and a previous disappointing season because of it.

All the best...

Amy

Scott - none of the hills at CDA are huge, they just never end - so training on rolling hills is good. A couple are a bit steep but not too bad - If I remember correctly the longest hill takes less then 5 minutes to climb. It is a 2 loop bike course - lots of people do the first loop too fast - -I equal split the two loops and spent the majority of the second loop passing all those that had gone out too fast. Patience - the course is really enjoyable. Make sure that you are watching the water temperatures leading up to race day - it was really cold last year - the let us wear booties and I was thankful. There is a lot of snow out here this winter as well so the water could be cold again.

Hi Scott, Welcome. I did CDA last year as my first IM - - its a great race! Don't worry about the Boston/CDA thing - maybe back off a bit on the pace at Boston so that you can recover quickly. I'm doing Canada this year - and hoping that I will be needing to fly to Hawaii 6 weeks later - -my coach gave me the ok on 2 IM's that close together, what a little marathon with 8 weeks to recover?

P.S.---Dude, you are an animal. What was the temperature that day you took the picture at the lake? Were you riding your road bike or a mountain bike? You are an inspiration for those of us who become squirrly during the winter.

Scott,
Enjoy it man. We have nothing like that near me in Kentucky. I know your summers are short, but I would give anything to have a reservoir/lake like that to swim in through the late spring, summer and early fall. Looks like you could do some nice ice fishing on it now though.

Scott, Just checked out your page. Nice layout. Army Special Forces! How did you find me on here? I haven't been on in awhile. After reading your Tri Story I feel motivated. Is that Lake Placid on your background? Nice picture.

Scott,
Thanks for the tip on the background with picture....I guess if your picture color changes that makes it tough with the text color. Anyway it really makes an impact to come to your page and see that beautiful lake.....probably frozen over big time right now, huh? Hope your winter conditioning and base training is going well.
Bob
