Google Maps is currently Beta testing a bike route choice on the Google Maps webpage.  I played around with it some last night, and it is pretty good.  A word of warning is it has a generic pace of 10 mph used for creating time estimates.   Below is…

Do a You Tube search on Savageman or Westernport Wall, it will show an extreme climb, but also shows multiple angles because they have to snake up it. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=westernport+wall&search_type=&aq=4&oq=westernport+

I'm training to be an EMT right now and I plan to volunteer in some races that I don't race. Thought this might be a good group to join to hear about common injuries and remedies. If its a serious condition, I'd know how to treat it, but we don't re…

Relationship Status:
Single
About Me:
in 2008 i did 8 triathlons including my first half iron distance. I do have some physical challenges to over come, i have a shoulder with a muscle that was reattached in 2004, in September 2005 I was in a head on collision ( i was doing 35mph in my truck, the person running from the cops 40 - 60mph) did a real number on my back, could not bike for over a year, took lots of PT (pain therapy, physical torture, pain &torture, etc), was no longer able to ride rigid bikes ( hence the softrides), I also have a birth defect called tarsul coalitions which means my ankles are mostly fused with the exception of an updown movement, can't run (I want a shirt with a slow moving sign on the back for the "run" just for laughs) on a good day i can race/ fast walk 10 - 12 minute miles.

In November 2008 I moved to Illinois and am looking forward to racing, due to the winter, i have ramped up my swimming and do 3 shorter workouts (2,500 - 4000yds) two longer (4000-9,000yds) usually about 10 -12+ miles a week

This year i have done three races so far:
Illini, Mattoon Mayhem, and Rockman Half

On the way to Savageman Half-Iron, Cheseapeake man (aquabike full) i started to expierance sever back pain where my injury was, this has pulled me out of tri for the rest of the year and my hopes of doing Beach 2 Battleship full in November are past,,hopefully after some healing time and training i will be back at it next year
My Tri Story:
Did a 8 races in 2008 and a half iron, all with fused ankles and a few other issues. because of my ankles i have to push on the Swim and bike, and race the clock on the run. Did 6 in 2009 including 3 halfs, volunteered at Louisville IM
Tri Experience:
In training, Age grouper
Tri Distance:
Sprint, Olympic, 2x Olympic (or approx 70.3 mi/113.1km)
Tri Interest:
Training Partners, Training Groups, Event Meet-ups, Friends, Dating
My key race for 2010:
Steelhead 70.3

10/19/09

On Sept 18th i was enroute from Chicago ( yorkville, IL) to Mc Henry MD for the Savageman Half Iron and a week later Chesapeake man Ultra. I had been pushing myself farther and harder then i had been told is possible for me to do.

About 100 miles east of Columbus Ohio i started expierancing back pain in a spot that i had a previous injury from a head on. Determined not to quit, i kept going, by the time i reached Washington PA i had to pull over as i was in pain and had a tingling sen… Continue

Finally back on the bike

Finally after almost a month i am back on the bike and have not lost too much in it, I was able to get in 44 miles, and am going to head off to swim, then bike back home.

Was getting kinda worried with Steelhead being less then a month off and not having been able to get on the road at lately due to the back spasms.

still dealing with the spasms in the back, still hurts. I did not do the Louisville camp which kinda sucks, was looking forward to it. i have managed to get back in the pool and swim, just dialed back a lot.

Thursday was 4,100 yards (300,500,2200, 800, 300)
Friday was a straight 4,400, which of course the doctor tried calling me, have to do my follow up on the xrays on monday.

Still no biking or running, other then exercise bike

What a bummer! What kind of hotel doesn't have a treadmill?? Sounds like you are in the same boat with traveling as me. I was in Orlando for Christmas---Michigan for New Years---and headed out to Chicago for work next week, and possibly going snowboarding in Tahoe. Not sure if I am going to do that just because the month is tight with travel already.

Mike,
The roads are a lot safer than Hawaii. Not much traffic here and flat roads. There is a MS ride with 30, 50 , 75 and 100 mile rides in September. The drivers seem to be wary of the bikers and I've never had anybody try to scare me like Hawaiian drivers. It would be good to have another triathlete here to train with. When are you coming here? Give me a call at (808) 227-2746, (hawaiian cell number. Ralph

Hi Mike, It's about 44 today so I haven't been able to do much riding except for on the trainer. There are a few bike groups around. I haven't connected with any of them yet, as my Trek E11 developed corrosion and had to be replaced. New Bern is a great town. It has a great YMCA with two pools. The outside pool is covered and heated during the winter. New Bern's 300th anniversary is 2010 and there are lots of activities planned.

Wilmington has the Beach to Battleship Triathlons in Septrber with 70.3 and full Ironman -no slots though.
