Profile Information

Relationship Status:
Single
About Me:
I am an Ironman.

Just completed my 1st Tandem Skydive jump
My Tri Story:
"Anything is possible"

Last year I decided to make a plan with the 2 fears that I do have. (I am afraid of snakes & afraid of swimming?? – in other words I cannot swim)

So I decided to attend swimming classes. Well my 1st day at swimming beginner lessons - I thought that we might start with a meeting similar to AA meeting – where everyone must sit around a table and say I am an alcoholic – in my case I cannot swim, BUT that was not the case. I was told to get into the water - at the age of 32 started to learn to swim. So a long process started with my swimming lessons and slowly I started to learn to swim. Well - for the beginners out there (like me) - this was not an easy task. This took me exactly 1 year to actually start swimming properly. Today 3 August 2008 - this was the first day that I could actually swim without stopping to take breaks in between. I could just go on and on - I could not believe it - Today I can say I did overcome my "fear" of swimming. In about 2 months from now I will participate in the Spar Oceanracing series in Port Elizabeth 1km & 2 km ocean swim. I will also participate in my first Ironman 70.3 South Africa event next year 18 January 2009.

Just an update - Swimming is easy now although I might be the last person back at the Sprint/Olympic distance triathlons that I am doing at the moment. Life is great! Tri life is great! Can't wait for Ironman early next year.

Update: Half Ironman was a great experience - It took me 06H27 to complete the event with a smile on my face - I did it!
I even wrote on the back of my race number "NEVER GIVE UP", but I never even thought about giving up. Life is great!

Another Update: 5 April 2009 - I am an Ironman now. Completed my 1st full Ironman in 14:02. During this race, I was already thinking about my next Ironman event. Warning to all - Triathlons are addictive. Had a bit of bike problems on the race.

Completed: Ironman 70.3 in January 2010 - East London SA.
And also Full Ironman SA -PE - One hour faster than last year.

Next year I also plan to do both the half Ironman and Full Ironman SA.
Tri Experience:
In training, Age grouper, It's my livelihood, I'm a repeat finisher!
Tri Distance:
Sprint, Olympic, 2x Olympic (or approx 70.3 mi/113.1km), Long course (or approx 140.6 mi/225.3km)
Tri Interest:
Training Partners, Training Groups, Friends
My key race for 2010:
Ironman 70.3 SA 2010 & Full Ironman SA 2010

Motivational Quotes

You are the only one that can hear yourself talk, be sure to tell yourself what you want to hear

If everything is going your way, then you are probably heading in the wrong direction.
EXPECT the BEST
PLAN for the WORST
PREPARE for SURPRISES

"There's no such thing as bad weather, just soft people."

"Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win."

"If you can't run fast, run far."

"Your biggest challenge isn't someone else. It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs, and the voice inside you that yells 'CAN'T", but you don't listen. You just push harder. And then you hear the voice whisper 'can'. And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are."

"It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit."

"If you can't fly, then run. If you can't run, then walk. If you can't walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, keep moving."

"There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing."

Everyone is an athlete. The only difference is that some of us are in training, and some are not.

Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.

Thanks for the add! You're pretty optimistic when you say I will be in the top 100 for IronMan UK... if if can finish in the top 1000, I'll be happy!
If you do IronMan Nice in France in 2011, I'd say we'll meet there!
I already said Kiewiet (from Gyminee), that I'll be there with him to do the 2010 IronMan SA.

I haven't heard the World In Union song, who does the version on your page? I found several versions on iTunes.

Sweet. The DVD usually ships within 5-8 days, so it should go out soon. After watching it, I'm guessing you'll realize snakes are simply roses thrown at your feet and swimming will seems like second nature! Drew was told he couldn't run and at 5'4", he's not really much of a swimmer either, so anything IS possible!

Truly grateful for the info!!!
Already checked out their Port Elizabeth Tourism site and found some guest houses but they're booked ---dang! Summerblue was perfect!

It's encouraging to know it's a 7hour drive because we were considering that until we saw that the BAZ bus takes 14 hours!

Are you from South Africa?

Train safe and have a good London race!

Our next race is White Rock Half-Iron but we're heckling at ITO's O3 next weekend :)
