Rich Strauss and Patrick McCrann have found through years of racing and training athletes through their methods in Endurance Nation, that by training fast first, then adding far, the fatigue factor is much less. You are learning how and when to turn…
If you always do long, slow training, you will always ride slow when riding long. You need to push the endurance threshold and train your muscles to take in more oxygen. Go to EnduranceNation.com They have free info. to download, and sales on their…

Bob, any ideas as of yet, when training rides will be scheduled for doing the IMLOU bike course this spring/summer? I definately don't want to miss those. Can't think of anything more valuable to train for Lousiville than training IN Louisville! Eri…
I'm 51 years young, a teacher, and planning to do my first full Ironman next year, at Louisville! I have done 12 marathons, with my favorite one being the Great Wall Marathon in China, in 2005. This year I have come back to triathlon, and marathon, after sitting out all of last year, due to a broken foot, which rebroke 2 times after the initial break! I have done several sprint tri's, 2 Olympic tris, and Steelhead 70.3 twice.
My Tri Story:
Approximately 6-7 years ago, I would not put my face in the water. A marathon friend talked me into joining the YMCA training group for the local sprint triathlon, even though I was scared to death of the swim! At the swim training was a very patient swimmer named Lori, who worked with me and eventually got me to put my face in the water, and taught me how to properly swim. I did the triathlon, finished, and was hooked! I have always wanted to do an Ironman, never thought I'd do a half-Iron, and now i'm going to sign up for a full Ironman! Since March, I have lost 43 lbs. and am working on more, as I gained a lot of weight in the past 3 years. I'm now lifting weights , swimming regularly with a Master's program, and feeling great! I am hoping to learn a lot about Ironman training, Ironman Louisville, and meeting people who are doing the race in 2010.
Hey Barbara, i'm doing well. Training has been good but i feel like i hit a wall. I've been following a 1/2 ironman training schedule and i'm not sure if i'm recovering enough so i need to make some adjustments. Hope all is well with you.
Are you going to the Chicago Bike Swap tomarrow??? it's in palatine, il. I've never been to it but i hear you can get some great deals on all things bike related...
no groups as of yet, but there is a group that meets on sat/sun mornings in highland and out of crown point on wed nights for group rides. some good riders there so hopefully i can get stronger riding with them. i will also do a lot of solo rides. i'm gonna check out endurance nation since you mentioned it. i'm just winging it right now, but i know that won't work for the long haul.
i'm also getting ready for the florida 70.3 in orlando on may 16th, how 'bout you???
i have to check out bob's training rides, sounds good to me. As far as riding in laporte goes, i'm assuming those hills will be good around here, but i went down to louisville and i was blown away. those aren't hills, those are mountains to me :) who do you ride with?? is there a group you ride with??? hopefully i can keep up with you
Hey Barbara, I have a few tips I would love to share. Enjoy the training and make sure you get your long distance with the brick training. I had to learn to eat and hydrate better while cycling. There are some hills in KY. Take them easy cause I needed to save some for the run. A tip a guy gave me was to get a few 2-4 over 100 rides followed by 10-15 mile runs. I don't use this site much but I'm gonna tri (hee hee) to log on more often. but my cell is 302-249-2189
Hi Barbara, No i have never run Chicago, only my second marathon but it is my hometown, so that is exciting!
I am too going for complete rather than compete, have also been battling a little ITBS, getting a cortisone shot Monday and hope i can run the whole thing with a smile on my face at the end.
Are you in Chicago? Looks like you are doing Louisville 2010......congrats, I hope I can get into IM AZ online. Thought about Louisville since it was open but I can drive to AZ in one day.

Hi Barbara,
Congratulations on signing up for the IM!!!!!
You are going to ave the time of your life. And you're going to do great.
Words of advice:
-Get a training AND execution plan and stick to it, till the bitter end!
-Get down there and ride the course, as many times as you can. It will really help you out, physically and mentally.
-Dial in your nutrition plan (long rides are good for this)
-Toward the end of training, you will feel as if you've had enough...that's normal. Push through, it will be worth it in the end.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you out!!!!
Nate

My goal was also to avoid injury, and finish. About half way through the run I was feeling no pain and passing lots of people (those who passed me in the swim and bike earlier!) so it was a real pleasure. Overall a fabulous experience, which led me to considering taking this sport up as seriously as I can. (Believe it or not, I had no idea what ironman really meant until this week... now I'm going crazy thinking about doing one!! okay, one step at a time...)
