About Me:
Well I am just your standard model 40 year white guy who can not stop running, swimming, or cycling.
My Tri Story:
I started tri's late in life...35, lol. I did it as a way to stay active and challenge myself after a major injury...long story but funny now. Love the people involved and the challenges both physically and mentally it takes to train and race. I nearly lost my arm in a training accident at work. That was one of the toughest moments of my life when the doctor came into the room as I was getting ready to head into the second of many surgeries. I am sitting there holding my bloated, deformed, and just down right nasty looking arm with my good hand. Doctor looks me straight in the eye and says he may not be able to save it. I am man enough to admit a few tears were shed. After a few more surgeries the arm is saved and I head into physical therapy. At this point I can no longer perform my duties in the Navy so I am on long term limited duty. While the therapists are optomistic I can see in their eys they do not think a full recovery is possible. The head medical officer from our command actually says I should be medical boarded out of my job specialty and possibly the Navy as a whole. Now you got to remember this is at the start of the war and before all the press of soldiers and sailors with amputations fighting back to perform their duties. So floating in limbo with my days starting in the morning and ending in the evenings with physical and occupational therapy I needed something to challenge me. Something to fill my days because sitting at home feeling sorry for myself was out of the question. Many guys at work are into triathlons and this gave me the goal I needed. I was living in San Diego so it was easy to pick races, Sprints, to give myself something to shoot for. Since then I have been using triathlons to set my goals. To push me to never give up no matter the obstacle life has thrown down in my path.
Tri Experience:
Spectator, In training, Age grouper
Tri Distance:
Sprint, Olympic, 2x Olympic (or approx 70.3 mi/113.1km), Long course (or approx 140.6 mi/225.3km)
Tri Interest:
Training Partners, Training Groups, Event Meet-ups, Friends
My key race for 2010:
Ford Ironman 70.3 California

Tennis anyone

This was actually written back in August. Just love all things sports and thought I would share.

There I was at the U.S. Open Series tennis match in Washington D.C. on Sunday. Of course everyone worth watching is currently over in Beijing trying to win the gold. Except Andy Roddick, whom I hoped would be in the final match on Sunday. Sadly his attempt to use the tournament to boost himself into the U.S. Open next month did not go so well since he lost in the semi's. So there I am watching Mr. 2… Continue

Race Expo turns into O.K. Corral

Saturday morning was the kick off to my weekend of fun with the Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon in Virginia Beach firmly established as the main event. Finished up my last minute packing. Let the dogs out one last time then hit road. I wanted to get down to the expo early enough to enjoy being tempted by the many...”Oh, I need one of those shirts” or “Wow a belt just for GU packs, neat-O”. So the drive down was uneventful, which for me is amazing since the state troopers along I-95 and I have a long… Continue

Just my Pride!

Earlier in the day I am up at Bethesda Naval Hospital for a scheduled eye exam. Apparently in the military you are supposed to have one more then every 10 years or so. As I am going through the exam the eye doc asks "You
are against having your eye's dilated?" “Ummm...no, I have no problem with that.” "Well you did not sign the consent part of the form!" "Oh,guess I did not see it", I say while cracking up. Eye Doc does not find my humor
funny [many people don't] and realizes this exam has alrea… Continue

Hey Andy, I appreciate your offer. I didn't make it to D.C., but Luke made it with the team. They had a great race and avoided the hurricane here. I rode the storm out and it was NOT fun. It was really depressing overall. I do have power and water. Houston was spared the tragedy the bay area got. =(... so sad. We are slowly getting back to "normal". Gas and basic necessities are slowly but surely becoming more available. I was going to do Hi-Fi Olympic tri to make up my D.C. race but Galveston is not passable so the race is canceled. The race director is trying to come up with some sort of benefit race to help the Galveston community. Both cities cherish each other so we're praying for them. I've yet to visit D.C......maybe some other time. Take care!

Sounds great Andy. Do you teach Cross Fit? I found it to be very rewarding. I am going to start back with it in the new year, once my Ironman is done in November in Arizona.

I am also signing up for a sports nutrition course in a couple weeks. It is not that I have to lose a ton of weight, but as a triathlete, we always think we can get rid of a few extra pounds to make us faster!!

Anyways thank you for your advice...it always help to have other people to talk to and hear things from! I am going to eliminate my diet coke one of these days...right now it is my only bad thing that I do...so for now :)

Talk to you soon.

Michelle, of course I accepted you as a friend. Thanks for asking.

First off as far as your comment about crossfit, as much as people like to say there is one program for all to be the magic cure to training, fitness, and more importantly physical image...there is none. Fitness is an individual thing, what works for me may not and probably will not work for many others. This is why it is important to join groups such as this website and local tri clubs and professional trainers. Most tri clubs will have someone who is a nutrition expert and training expert. To get where you want to be it needs to be tailored made to the person you are.

Lots of different factors come into play here...genetics is a big one we all breeze over...no matter how hard I try I can never get rid of these love handles my father gave me...lol. Crossfit is a different concept for strength training and any program designed to increase muscle strength is going to put on pounds. Also, anytime you spend doing strength training you are not spending doing cardio, fat burning, endurance training...etc.

While I do not think one diet soda a day is responsible for weight gain...I personally do not drink any. Does this mean it is the reason for you to gain weight...I can not tell you as well as if you sat down with a nutritionist and talked about what you eat...and more importantly when you eat, drink certain items. I find most people that drink one item such as a soda tend to do it first thing in the morning. Starting out your day with a sugar intake tends to keep your body craving sugar throughout the day. When you sneak a snae in the middle of the day the body is asking for more sugar. A nutritionist can break these things out. Showing you when it is best to cheat a little and when it is not.

There is so much that really comes into play here I would probably do you more of a diservice trying to address it all. I hope I was able to give you some food for thought. Let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Keep up the good work. Your friend....Andy

Andy, I have added you as a friend, I hope you accept. I did cross fit 3x per week from October to June of this year. I had to put it aside as it was taking away from my Ironman training (Arizona in November)...When I did my cross-fit, I ended up gaining 7lbs. I eat okay, it can be adjusted like anything, I have a diet coke a day (my only addiction)...do you think diet pop is to blame! I was though frustrated at my weight gain, when I was working so hard....ideas!

Let me clarify, I am not a model..but thank you for the compliment. I was trying to be cheeky in my profile and say I am just a standard, ordinary guy (basic model implied). Though I do have suggestions for weight loss. First rule...NO SODAS!! It is amazing how much weight I dropped once I ripped those empty calories out of my diet. The second secret to the holy grail of weight loss is eat more often but less amounts. The body can only digest so many calories before it starts looking for places to store the extra. I eat five smaller meals a day. This way I do not get urges to gorge myself at any one meal. No carbs after 8pm so my meal before I go to sleep is usually as close to all protein as I can make it. To live like this you have to cheat...plan for it. I started out with having a cheat day once a week. Now I will have a cheat day maybe once a month. Make sure your cheat day is a day you workout on and not a rest day. These are all things said by many others much smarter then me about nutrition. All I can say is it works for me.

Andy,
i am new to triathalon. I did a sprint distance on this past year and have been trying to get my weight down. I finished the race about middle of the pack but i saw you being a model you probably had some tips on that. Also did you use a tri-coach?
