Phuket Thailand....tropical paradise...beautiful blue water for those long ocean swims, great coastal roads for long 180km rides, HOT HOT HOT, and interesting villages to run through! And sunny all year long....ok gotta go train.
Living, Loving and enjoying life as a single mum on a tropical island....does not get much better than this folks.
My Tri Story:
At the start of 2008 I was a total couch potato and a friend asked me to be in her team for a sprint relay in March 08. I ran the 6km and thought I was going to die! (was in bed recovering for 2 days). She then some how convinced me that doing a half marathon and Bali Triathon in June was a much better idea than going to party in London as I had planned to!! So reluctantly I started training with her....the more I trained the more I loved it. I did the Bali Triathlon and finished an hour before my training buddy and fell in love with the sport. By this time I had already signed up with a trainer and for the Singapore IM 70.3. Now totally hooked and have just completed my first Ironman in Australia. I RACE EVER SINGLE KM WITH MY DAUGHTER IN MIND - SHE HAS DOWN SYNDROME AND MY CHALLENGES ARE NOTHING IN COMPARED TO WHAT SHE FACES EVERYDAY.....SHE IS MY HERO!!
I haven't been on the IamTri site much myself over the last few months, but checked back in after getting a few posts. I'll probably be more active on the site this year. Sorry to hear about your illness before Laguna. I guess that's bound to happen to us all if we race often enough. Your two IM events sound awesome, especially Zurich. What an adventure! Good luck in all of your training. We all know how much dedication it takes, but it sounds like you enjoy which sure helps fuel the motivation to hit it every day. Much better than fighting the battle of will power to train when you can rejoice in every step and stroke and be thankful you have the capability and opportunity to experience the reward that it brings.
I did make it to Phuket this year but only had two weeks of training after a 3 month hiatus due to a bike wreck in September. What a beautiful course in Thailand. The heat and lack of training really did me in, but finish I did. I've got to admit, tri's are a lot more fun when I'm competetive, but it was still worth the trip to check it out. I spent a week up in Chantaburi in October so I had a sneak peek at Thai culture. Pretty awesome. I'm curious, why do you live there?
Post IM, you feel sleepy all the time, isn’t? ;-) For a first timer like you, I would recommend 10 days completely off and another 10 days of 20-40mins a day. It is also a matter of mental recover, since I suppose you put on so much effort on the training AND racing day. The greatest aspect of IM recovery is that overeating is an important part of the recovery techniques! And don't rush out with the long runs, give your lower leg a rest.
Yep, I coach Fredrik, he has done an amazing work for the past year, and is on his way to become an ironman himself (Japan in June). And just like Fredrik, most of my athletes are age groupers (from 16h40 IM to sub 9h). I have a few slots open, so spread the word around ;-)
Regarding the camp in Phuket, I do one a year in Borsaen, see the one we did in Januray http://www.ironfolks.com/video/thailand-training-camp
Congrats on Australia! Ironman is something else, isn't? Are you planning another one in the future or was this a one off? How is recovery going? You will see that you will get much faster at the shorter races just by casting off the training you did for IMOZ, its great!
Training here has been going fine! We've settled in a pretty serious routine now with 3 weekly group workouts (1 track run, 1 swim, 1 long ride), so it is a nice way to keep the momentum going!!
I'll be in Phuket once again coaching my guys from BKK and Singapore, always a big event for me. See you there
I'm happy if I finish in the top 50%. I've been steadily climing up in my finishes since I started last fall with the goal of consistenty getting into the top 20% of my age group. I actually placed 3rd out of 17 in my age group in the last tri I did, but it was only a Sprint. Still, I didn't expect to hit the podium this early in my triathlon career. Makes me hungry for more! Unfortunately, I was never a competetive swimmer, biker or runner, so I'm not the ultra athlete some of these guys are. Like you said, the main goal is to have fun, meet great people and keep a healthy lifestyle.
Aj - I registered today. Thailand, here I come! It is actually going to be a fun race for me since the Florida IM was to be my finale for the season on November 7th. Phuket is just a bonus "after seaon" race. I've got 16 races scheduled for the season with 5 of them already behind me. It may sound like a lot, but mostly it's for experience and training - and for fun. I've targeted 4 key races that I'm really focused on, one at each distance - Sprint, Olympic, 70.3, and IM. I've also got a three mile swim and a marathon in the mix to see how I do on the long distances by themselves. I do need to add a century bike race somewhere in there as well.
I can't wait for Phuket though. It should be the highlight of the year.
