I ride a time trial bike and believe being areo is the best free speed out there. I also have a set of bars on my road bike for the simple fact that it gives you another position to choose from on long rides, and 112 mi is a long ride! Road bars with areo bars added gives you at least five different positions to mix it up and stay comfortable on those long century rides.
I'm also wondering about aerobars. I do not have a very aero bike (Kona Zing deluxe) and I have yet to ride on it for longer than an hour and a half in one sitting. I am not fast and unlikely to get a whole lot faster...just stronger and able to bike the distance. I'm guessing maybe 8 hours for my bike time. (cutting it close to the cut off time I know) A miracle if I do it in 7. Should I try aerobars?
Using aerobars while facing head winds or if you are riding over 18 MPH will save you a lot of energy but if you ride slow with no winds you will not feel any difference.Get used to the areobars take some time, you better ask a pro to fit your bike with the aerobars and start training on them at least 1 month before racing.
Also crosswinds may be more difficult to handle than in other positions.
The biggest thing about having aerobars is whether or not you are comfortable and have developed enough strength to stay down in them. If it is really uncomfortable for you and you have to move up and down out of them the whole ride, then it would probably be best to not have them at all. Yes if you are fit correctly on them it will make you more aerodynamic and faster, but comfort and the use of less energy for an ironman is more important.
I asked about aerobars a few days ago in Louisville 2012 forum. There are some helpful responses there!
does having aero bars really matter?
I tried to register for IM Florida on Monday, Iwas online at noon and found out that there were Zero general entry slots available. Did I do something wrong or were all the slots taken by volunteers and previous participants prior to on line registration?
@Michael - 2 workouts perday tues-fri is typical. long swim and bike on sat and long run on Sun and Recover on Mon... very typical.
@Neal - No, not worth the money to buy or rent for oly distance.
