What is everyone doing these next 2 weeks to get their bodies ready to race?
I always try to remind myself that taper is not about backing off, slowing down...it's about reducing volume and sharpening your fitness to peak on September 11, 2011!!!
My next 2 weeks I actually increase my swim volume a small amount. I think this helps keep fitness up and stress on the body down. My rides and runs are shorter but still have race pace or above intervals in them. Nothing too long, short periods just to keep the muscle memory.
I don't know about everyone else...but I can barely stand being at work (I like my job) right now. I just want to race! So much time and dedication has gone in to this year of training. I can't wait for the cannon to go off!!!
Be smart the next few weeks. Nothing can be done to gain any more fitness or strength, but you certainly can loose some if you are not smart. HAVE FUN
I'm still hitting it pretty hard. I ran 17 yesterday and 9 tomorrow (mile repeats at 7/m. And for the kicker my last long run thursday ,17 again. Not sure how i'm going to pull that off with work.
My bike distance is down and my swim is steady.
I'd bet I'm just about the only one still running long.
Not doing much, long run of 60 minutes with pick ups, long bike of 2 hours with 3X20 minutes at 90%, swim volume will stay the same. Sleep an additional 10 to 15 hours. Race week I just stay loose and rest.
I'm with Jeremy, reducing volume while maintaining intensity. I dropped my running off considerably last week as I had a monster week the week before of over 50 miles to peak that, which also coincided with my bike miles peak as well. Now its shorter runs and rides at a high intensity. I'm also increasing my swimming as well as I had to back off that a little during the peak run/ride weeks. Now its about recovery and maintaining strength and fitness as much as possible. The gains were hard won and are easily undone!
Cant wait for race week to get here. Labor Day weekend will be weird with only a few hours bike and run and so much other time. I guess that can be best used to go over all the gear and make sure the game plan is tuned and ready for race day.
I am in the same position as Jeremy - I cannot concentrate with work/school and I just want to go out and do the race right now!!! For training, this past Saturday was my last hard workout - 112 miles on the CompuTrainer (IMWI course) that served the purpose solely as a confidence booster by finishing it strong, knowing what effort is "too little" and what is "too much". This week, I am reducing my training volume by approximately 40%. Like many other people, I am not focusing on distances, but shorter and higher intensity workouts. In the end, I want to be well rested, fully recovered, and ready to take on IM Wisconsin!
If I was a betting man, it will be a wetsuit swim.
The weather forecast is looking good - but it will be what it will be...just no rain/thunder/lightning!!!
