Bob Rogers posted this question and I thought it deserved a DISCUSSION so it stayed here for people to see it and comment on it. Here is the question that he posed.....
Can anyone speak to the benefits of wearing compression stockings? Do you see benefits on the bike as well as the run, or neither? Thanks in advance for your help!
I am only a recent convert to compression. I didn't wear them during IM training or recovery. However, I wish I had thrown vanity to the wind and done so. I love the way they make me feel. I do believe they aid in my recovery after long runs...that and tart cherry juice. I have only worn them once during a long run and didn't like...felt too hot but for recovery...they are great. I bought the 2XU calf stockings.
I've used Zensah sleeves of and on for a few years now. I first got them because I heard they would take minutes off my marathon time (at a time when I needed just a few minutes to BQ). That didn't work, in fact, I got cramps in new places in the last 10K (I had only trained to 20 in the sleeves).
Sinced then I use them for recovery after long/hard training runs. I also run in them if I'm sufffering from a calf issue - I tend to have those frequently - my doc says it has to do with being old, trying to go too fast/do too much and from taking a statin cholesterol med.
I ran a marathon on 1/9 with a sleeve on my right calf. Worked well - the issue that had bothered me for two weeks didn't bother me in the race.
I think they're great for recovery. I wear them for 4-5 hours after a long run.
Competitor Magazine has had a few articles discussing compression. I currently am using either my 2XU compression leggings for recovery or their compression thermals for metabolic/recovery. Either way, here's the link:solinskys-socks
As promised, here is a full review. first, I should say that I am a big guy at 250 lbs. Lately, I have been haivn gstability problems with my chins. I was always skeptical of "compression" as a training or racing tool. I always liked the alll-natural approach and I wondered about the actual effectiveness of compression stockings for either biking or running. In short, I felt it was BS. Having had recent problems, I wanted to train without the fear that my chins would fall apart. I also wanted to stay a bit warmer. Someone recommended compression tights as a solution/building method, so I bought them. I got the 2XU compression tights XL.
Here is what I think. First, they felt ok. It was a little comical at first, but after some mild stretching, they felt nice. I started out running in a light snow. It was just below freezing or maybe on the line. It was cld, but not too cold. I starte out light as I had been working on the chin issue for quite some time. It felt like I was wearing nothing at all. My steps were smooth and for the first time in a while, runnign felt nice. My chins had no problems. After two miles, I felt like king of the world. I ended up runnign seven miles, which is my farthest run in a long time. I was also not really as cold as I shouldve been. I didn;t notice until my wife asked if I was cold. Not even my male member was cold. Kind of impressive. I felt awesome. Nothing hurt, no odd pains, nothing. It was great.
When I took them off, I felt wierd! The balance of tired muscles was not normal. Stability muscles that were normally tired were not. It was like getting off skates. A little wobbly. In the morning, I had to seriously question my decision to run that far. My joints hurt. I had ran seven miles for the first time in four monthes and I did it at a much faster pace then I ever would have without the tights. My joins just were not up for it. The next day (today), I am ready again. No pain, fully recovered. I can't wait.
So what does this mean?
1. The stockings are great in the cold. Good for training
2. They make running easier. Good for performance
3. They take away the need to stabilize. Bad for the lng term.
So I don;t plan to use these for all workouts, just cold weather. For races, I think they are a must. I can;t go back to racing without them.
Hi i used the stocks for the 1st time last year on my UK ironman and they were great, so 9 weeks later in Hawaii World champs used them again, great wore them on bike and run ,always before had pain of side of right knee , now one problems, so will wear them next race.
I wear the CEP full knee sock compression and LOVE them. Because the product takes a measurment of your calf it is better fitted than others I tried. Now I only use CEP. Last year I began wearing them while cycling and could tell a difference in the way my legs felt at 70 plus miles. Not near as much fatigue. This year I practically live in them. It is the new sexy in our house. :)
I plan on wearing them race day for the bike and run.
