OK, I'll admit it. I was one of the people who posted a DNF. Does anyone know how many people actually entered the race and how many people did not finish. I think that I would feel better if I knew the percentages.
I'm sorry your day didn't go as planned Jeff, those were definitely some tough conditions out there! They announced at the awards banquet that 2555 athletes started the race, but only 2067 finished, there was a 16% DNF rate - 488 athletes. Over 400 athletes also didn't start the race that had registered.
2067/2555(*100) makes 81% finishers (not 84 which would mean 16% dnf)
That means 19% did not finish. Am I confused here?
And: This is a huge amount of Non-starters - roughly a sixth of the athletes?
Well, Martin does certainly not recall that many missing numbers between the transition bags - he and the boys sorted them.
Sorry, you two that the race didn't go as expected.
Jeff, I know the feeling. I trained all summer in the heat and humidity, rode parts of the LOU course 3 different times, and truly believe I would finish. But, not having my RX glasses, biking in RX goggles, and not having my nutrition bottle for the first 1/2, really put the nail in the coffin. Part of me wants revenge....the other part says do IMFL like everyone keeps telling me to.
Jeff, I'm with you. I DNFed and wanted to know how many others did (especially after seeing the number of people leave the course before I did!) And you never wish ill-will on someone else, but it kind of makes you feel a little better knowing that others had a hard time out there. Almost like you weren't alone. Good for you for signing up for next year! :) Here's hoping that next year is your year!!!! I'm sure it will be!
Even though I finished, I'm understanding my slow results better based on the high DNF percentages (which appear to be 19%). My time was over 90 minutes slower than my previous and only other IM distance tri. The heat was simply staggering and it was hard for a Clydesdale like me to keep my core temp down. The heat was the only thing I stressed about before this race. Now I realize why.
Jeff, you did it 2009 and you'll do it again in 2011. My hat is off to you for registering for IMKY again. You won't see me there. I'm doing IM Lake Placid where is will be at least 15 - 20 degrees cooler on average, maybe more. I'll take the hills over the heat any day. Best of luck to you my friend.
