Cd'A, Sandpoint in top 'Great Towns'

Publication features '100 Best Getaways for a Vacation or a Lifetime'
By RICK THOMAS
Staff writer

Two of 100 of the greatest towns in the country are less than 50 miles apart. Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint are included in the latest edition of "The Great Towns of America," a 624-page book that features the "100 Best Getaways for a Vacation or a Lifetime."

The Lake City is a solid 10, at least during the summer months. That was just one of the aspects of the city that landed it in the recently published book.

"It beat out every other town in the Rocky Mountain region for its summer weather," said David Vokac, who with wife Joan crossed the country north to south and east to west to compile the guidebook first published in 1998. "From June to mid-September it is a flat-out 10."

That evaluation is based on the "shirtsleeve score," the likelihood of days above 65 degrees and dry enough for outdoor activities.

Only towns with populations of less than 80,000 were considered, and the North Idaho selections shared several attributes that gave them repeat status in the book.

Lake Coeur d'Alene and Lake Pend Oreille, historic and cultural significance and low crime are attributes shared by both communities. Each also has individual amenities that make them stand out on the Vokacs' "livability table" that includes weather, education, crime, income, housing and politics.

The Coeur d'Alene Public Library and Schweitzer Mountain were also standouts, David Vokac said.

"Quantifiable facts, such the existence of a library and the number of hours it is open are important," he said. "It tells you something about the commitment the community is making."

Schweitzer Mountain Resort's proximity to Sandpoint was a big plus there, he said, along with the fact that it is continually being upgraded.

"Any time Schweitzer and Sandpoint get recognized it confirms to us who work and play here what we already know," said Haley Sorbel, communications coordinator for the resort. Making it into such publications is always good for tourism there, she added.

Kimberli Walker, chairwoman of the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce Tourism Council, agreed.

"I think our members are proud of the area and know it is one of the best in the nation," she said.

Lake Coeur d'Alene, Vokac said, is one of the most beautiful in the world, and Lake Pend Oreille among the finest in the country and like the mountain is easily accessible.

"It's not just a pretty sight," he said. "It's warm enough to be swimmable, and with its marinas it's highly usable."

Vokac said smaller towns are selected because most that grow beyond 100,000 in population tend to lose some of their character.

Because of Coeur d'Alene's limited available land for population growth, that is unlikely, said Jonathan Coe, president and general manager of The Coeur d'Alene Area Chamber of Commerce.

He echoed Sorbel's take on making it into the book again.

"It confirms what everybody here has known," he said. "It's obviously very positive for us to be recognized that way."

Along with a wide variety of attractions such as lake cruises and ample outdoor activities, The Coeur d'Alene Resort is a significant asset that provides not only lodging, but dining, meeting facilities and a lobby that make it visitor-friendly, Vokac said.

"Coeur d'Alene is now one of the largest and liveliest vacation destinations in the northern Rocky Mountains," he says in his opening page about the city. "One of America's best resorts connects a picturesque downtown to a superb lakefront park with colorful gardens, tree-shaded picnic sites, a scenic promenade by a long sandy beach, swimming areas, a handsome museum and a municipal pier for a variety of lake cruises."

Coe said he is certain the North Idaho economy will make a comeback and lists such as the book will be what people use to make a decision on where to visit and where to live.

"Every time we get another feather in our cap it is one more boost to the economy," he said.
