I understand that the IMAZ swim may take a different sort of "crawl" this year. Anyone have news on the "disappearing lake" portion of this year's event. Crawling through mud and dead fish could take a little of the charm out of my first IM!
yes, they CLAIM. I don't know how the govm't works in AZ, but in TX, it is rare that things get done on time. Nov. 1st is too close for comfort as far as I'm concerned, and I wish there would be a contingency plan on IM's part as far as another possible swim location if this lake doesn't get fixed/filled in time
My coach said they are looking at other swim venues, possibly Saguaro Lake for the swim. The Bee Line Highway could still be used for the bike portion. It may just be logistically challenging to get that many people at the lake though.
There are other lakes, but of course, they are not in the center of Tempe, so a contingency plan means an entirely different bike course at least.
There are four months to go, so it's a little early to start worrying about things you can't do anything about. I would assume that they'll have it fixed in the next few weeks, because it's going to take a long time to refill the lake. If that doesn't happen, then maybe start asking about contingency plans.
If they get it together, look forward to swimming in cleaner water than has been in the lake for years.
well that is a relief, Ann. I hope your coach is right. I would HATE for my 1st IM to be a duathlon :( In the meantime, I am planning to train as though nothing is wrong, and Nov. 21st will be my day to become an ironman.
We didn't have a Friday Status Report for you because we were saving our great news for Monday morning, when you need it the most. Arizona Department of Water Resources has given Tempe permission to fill Tempe Town Lake. We will start this process this Friday, at about 7 a.m. Click to read the announcement and see the letter of permission. Everyone is welcome to join us at Boat Beach. We expect Town Lake to be completely full by Oct. 25, nearly a month before Ironman Arizona.
