I'll be completing in my first Ironman 70.3 June 26, 2011 at the Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3. I need to buy a wetsuit. The water temp will be in the low to mid 70s; so I don't need a lot. Any recommendations? Thanks
It depends on how much (if any) buoyancy you need. If you just want speed go for a skin. If you want to go the suit route, I've used the long-john version of the Blue Seventy Reaction @ Lavaman (Olympic) in Kona where the water temp was 77 degrees and several Olympic distance swims in CA where the water temp was in the high 60s. Also, I'd recommend renting a suit first if it's an option. If you want/need even more buoyancy Blue Seventy also makes the Axis in long-john which is like having a life vest on :)
I definitely recommend renting a suit first. I rented for three triathlons before purchasing. The one I rented was blueseventy and it was a higher quality than the full I eventually bought, but I don't think it made a difference in my swim times.
I suggest a full though -- as others have said before me, if it's cold enough for a wetsuit it's cold enough for a full. And it can definitely be too cold for a John -- I wouldn't have wanted anything but a full for my last race, that's for sure.
