I finished the Ironman Championship in Kona, HI in 1983 at the age of 40. Now almost 30 years later I find myself back into tri-training hoping to complete a Half IM in 2012 and a full IM in 2013 at the age of 70; my goal is Kona again. Back in 1983, I started training for tri's when I was already in 3 hour marathon shape, and the biking and swimming came fairly easy with about 9 months of training. Things are different now, since I haven't ran much in the last 20 years. I am finding that swimming 1-1.5 miles in the pool at a 30 min/mile pace isn't that hard, and biking out to 35-40 miles at 15-16mph isn't bad either, but running -oooh, not so easy. Anything beyond 3 or 4 miles at a 10 min. pace is torture. I am 6 feet tall, and weighed 165 lbs in 1983, I am now at 200 lbs. I keep hoping that the running will get easier as I lose weight. I also think that my legs are too tired to run, as I have been pushing my swimming and biking a lot since they are easier. I am now backing down to 1-2 workouts a week in the pool and on the bike and focusing on running. I have lost 20 lbs in the last few months since my training began. I would like to hear from others on a similar quest. I would appreciate any inspiration and advise I can get.
