So it has begun....we have our first contribution to "THE BOOK" with a very impressive chapter that is 6 pages long and includes color pictures. Now we need to think of a title for the book
I am spearheading a project to get a book published by early 2012. It started out of this group of iamtri 50+ triathletes and we have about 20+ authors interested so far to create a book that is inspirational, funny and informative especially for the over 50 triathlete but not exclusively so. I envision the book to be 150 pages with about 20+ chapters of approximately 4 to 8 pages each more or less. Please consider being a part of this project and submit a chapter by October 16th. To make it all official I will be giving two (2) free books to each "contributor" ( aurthors, proofreaders, artists, graphics etc ) upon publication and of course the ability to buy books at a discount to sell on the individual authors own etc. I imagine your website, books, and clinics etc. will benefit from being included. Any way you want to get involved let me know. My e-mail for this project is:
Can you say "Ironman Distance" ? I see that used sometimes. Have you gotten the cover stuff from my sister? I haven't checked or heard anything from either of you so thought I'd ask. Also, when I sent in my chapter there was something I forgot to add. If it's too late that's OK, but otherwise I'd like to send an updated paragraph. I also forgot to put my byline on my chapter, but maybe you added it in.
Christy - I am nervous about using the term "Ironman" in any way connected to "triathlon" or "triathletes" as I have already been threatened by the owner of the trademark the powerful WTC is very agressive in legally protecting their brand.
Christy ( and Authors ) send me any additional info you want added....
Then we should definitely stay away from that term! saying 140.6 finisher will do. But what should we do about naming a race we are signed up for or have completed, when it IS an Ironman race? Do we have to change that too? Seems pretty stupid of them, it's free advertisement!!!
So how do other books get around this? Because there are a lot of them with Ironman in the title. So what did they do to allow that?
I do think we should be able to describe our races by their names without issue, if my understanding of IP law is correct.
I have been reseaching the "fair use doctrine" and although the term "ironman" can be used in an artcicle and book:
"As noted by the U.S. Copyright Office, the distinction between fair use and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission and acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission."
I don't believe this is a fair use issue. It's News. You are allowed to report on what really happened to you using the real terms.
When I was doing photojournalism, we were allowed to record ambient sound in our videos even if copyrighted songs were playing and we were certainly allowed to say we were at the "2010 Ironman Arizona" race. As two examples.
The only issue I could see is using Ironman in the title.
What if we use a "_________________" in the text and the reader can write in the word like a mad-lib"
So rather than:
...and then Mile Reilly announced "Wayne Rendely..you...are...an...IRONMAN!!!
...and then ______________announced "Wayne Rendely..you...are...an...._______________!!!!
of course they could write in:
...and then the local hoodlums announced "Wayne Rendely..you...are...an.... imbecile !!!!
LoL Wayne, I like __________________!!!!
The very last and final absolute deadline for chapter submission is:
MONDAY - APRIL 23rd. I have a meeting with "The Book Doctors"
later this month. I want to have all the chapters in my hands by April 23rd.
I hope this is do-able for you. I will send a release forms that is needed
I had a great experience this weekend, volunteering at Oceanside 70.3 Ironman
Nice to know you are almost there. Well done on sticking with it! I assume you don't need any more from the Kiwi connection?
Very Exciting News! I just got off the phone with _________________________ the authors of ____books and also the best selling authors of a getting your book published type of book. They travel around the country to the various bookstores promoting their book. I pitched our book to them late last year and he remembers my pitch and now with the improvements I have made and the more detailed info about it that I have given him he believes that our book can be picked up by one of the well established and known book publishers he has worked with. He has told me how to register the book with the writer guild of america so that it cannot be "stolen" and then to send him the manuscript for him to personally pitch it for us to them. I will be meeting him personally on June 2nd. Please have patience. I will send the chapter writers an e-mail with some additional information......
