Well the intention was to retire from long course after next year's Ironman Australia. I've spent a lot of time over the last 15 years training to compete in various events so after the next one was time to give back to the family and just muck around playing a bit of golf and doing the odd short course (xTerra sounds cool). So what happens, USM Events has announced this week a new Ironman (not WTC thankfully because I think their attitude sucks but unfortunately they are a necessary evil) in Queensland, Australia (the state I now live in, yeah I'm a Kiwi and will always be) called Challenge Cairns. I am not going to go into geographical, too descriptive detail about the place except it's 1,675km north of where I live, near the top east of Australia and according to a lot of people the bike course should be surreal (it's coastal and they say it's where the rain forest meets the sea). I have the green light to give this a crack in 2012 (2011 is out because IMOZ is only 1 month earlier). I want to do it but if I do I also want to go out with a bang. I am considering doing 3 IMs in 6 months in 2012. The first Challenge Wanaka (usually in January and it's in the homeland and Wanaka is to New Zealand what Noosa is to Queensland (my view only)). The second is Ironman New Zealand in Taupo (got to do the national event finally don't I) which is usually in the March. The last of course is Challenge Cairns which should be in the June. My question Iron People is; is this achievable, sensible or am I just flying a kite? I have never done an IM in New Zealand and I really want to do this new one so why not bundle the whole bloody lot into one big parcel. My intention is only to finish not break any records. And yes I should already know the answer but your feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'll leave this one with you. Off to bed now because I have a 2km ocean swim at Burleigh Heads in the morning (it starts before the sparrows start farting, got to get up by 4:30am for a 7:00am start and we have to drive 1:30 hours to get there)!
