I am training for my first Ironman race, Lake Placid in July. I have done one Iron distance race to date and am starting to train for this years race. I am looking for a place warm and dry roads to train in early April. I am willing to fly pretty much anywhere in the USA mainland, where it will be warm enough. I really want to concentrate on cycling. It would be great to have training buddies while down there, so if you have a club or something that would be great. I'm in Canada and I will be running fair distances by then and the swimming is going well too, but the cycling I find hard to get motivated in my living room. I think if I could have a early start like this it would first, motivate me to train in the next month to be somewhat able to keep up and secondly that week of training would certainly be beneficial.
I am not a very fast runner (4:30min marathon) or cyclist (avg 18-19miles/h) and that will be the beginning of my cycling season so I'm not sure how fast a group I could hang with but I'm sure there are people out there that I could match with.
I will be looking for an hotel and will be very independent while down there. It would be really nice if you could direct me to a cycling shop that could rent me a decent road bike...doesn't matter if it is TT or road as long as it is fitted ok for that week.
Last thing, I'm not a very competitive person. I do this sport to go beyond my own limits but I mostly do it for fun and because I love being part of such a positive group we are! I hope someone can help me out! I really want to get an early start!
Are you looking for a camp? How long would you be in this warm weather spot?
Tucson will be quite warm by then and might be a good option, though I've never trained there.
San Diego is a great place with a large and very active, friendly Tri Club. They have group rides, swims, and runs during the week and on weekends. I'm sure you would be welcome. That first weekend of April is busy with a 70.3 in Oceanside and a very large 5000 m. run race in Carlsbad. Nytro in north county coastal Encinitas rents TT bikes by the day or week or whatever.
been to San Diego once before and I agree that would be a great place to go. I'm totally considering this one! Do you live and train down there?
I guess that is what I'm looking for. Not necessarily a camp, although that would work too. Showing up the week before the 70.3 and finishing with volunteering would be absolutely awesome!
Thanks a lot,
